Abingdon Studios is the only artist led contemporary arts and studios space, located in the heart of Blackpool town centre located above Abingdon Street Market. Designed as a place where artists can produce new work while drawing on Blackpool’s rich and unique cultural landscape. It is a supportive environment which encourages risk taking and the creation of new ideas.
The space houses ten Blackpool based artists as well as providing a residency studio and project space for studio artists, residency artists and external artists looking for a place to show, discuss and produce new work.
Abingdon Studios was developed through artist lead research and then given seed funding in partnership with Blackpool Council’s Economic Development Division and Arts Service and LeftCoast. Now independently constituted (since Oct 2016) Abingdon has delivered an ambitious and diverse programme of exhibitions and international residencies.
Residency artists have included Aesthetica prize winner Adam Basanta (Montreal) and the acclaimed video documentary maker Benjamin Orlow (Finland). Abingdon has recently been listed in the A-N’s Artist Led Hot 100 and best visual arts venue in The Guardian online cultural guide.
The studios also work closely with Blackpool & The Fylde College’s School of Creative Arts to offer a shared studio space for graduate artists, as part of a professional development programme to support young and emerging artists.
