The Golden Repair

“I will develop a piece of work that recognises the resilience of the people of Blackpool. I intend to utilise an incredibly old technique: Kintsugi (Golden Repair), a technique developed in 15th century Japan which belongs to the Japanese Philosophy Wabi-Sabi (an embracing of the flawed and imperfect). I will embrace the cracks in Blackpool’s urban landscape, particularly on pavements, roads and walls and embellish them with Kintsugi. My intervention will be a quiet demonstration, a metaphorical rebellion of the constant negative scrutiny we continually and publicly endure as a northern seaside town. It will demonstrate that we heal and we carry on. We endure the knock backs and neglect, and move on; after all we are at the edge of the land and at the mercy of the sea, but that’s ok.”
