A Darren Art B and B

Current Projects

Art Bed and Breakfast

The A B&B is a project conceived and developed by LeftCoast. It will be a traditional Blackpool Bed and Breakfast re-imagined by artists as a small-scale space for exhibiting, developing  and staging artists’ work whilst still functioning as a small hotel for paying guests. We are at a capital development stage on a seafront property immersed within the Illuminations stretch on Blackpool Promenade.

There is exciting scope to inhabit the space with inter/national artist’s commission; from the room design to the breakfast menu, it is the vision of the project to immerse people in a contemporary visual language.

Alongside the day to day operations A B&B will aspire to self-generate a programme of talent development for the arts and cultural sector, creative conversations, artist residencies and new project development.

It will create a new way for residents and visitors alike to experience high quality arts activities in a familiar and popular environment.

Whilst the arts offer is acting as the main attraction and focus of the CIC and its premises, it will be serviced by a commercial operation incorporating:

– Guest accommodation of up to 17 rooms

-Public amenity spaces including café and bar

-Multi-function rooms for meetings, events and performances

It is an experiment to develop a sustainable, scalable business model to fund ongoing creative activities for communities and if successful would be capable of expanding to refurbish more of Blackpool’s 4000 B&Bs.

In the last 18 months the project has developed significant funding partnerships to raise the capital costs of refurbishment and pay for the initial stages of project delivery when open.

We have also attracted significant investment in our cultural commissions programme, which will see over 30 artists making work responding to and specifically for the A B&B.

Current funding partners include:

-Power to Change – Community Business Fund

-Coastal Communities Fund

-Arts Council England Small Capital Grants

-Tudor Trust

-Clore Duffield Prize Fund
